CCJ Statement on the passing of Dr. Joseph Archibald QC
Provided below is the official statement of the Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission and the Caribbean Court of Justice on the passing of Mr. Joseph Archibald QC, former commissioner of the Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission.
The Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission and the Caribbean Court of Justice joins with the rest of the Caribbean Community to mourn the passing of Dr Joseph Archibald QC, former long-serving member of the RJLSC from 7th July 2006 to 19th August 2013.
During that time, the Commission and the Court benefitted from his wide-ranging legal expertise. Dr. Archibald was instrumental in charting the waters of governance for the RJLSC and for the CCJ, then in its infancy. The records of the Commission attest to his very potent contributions and uncompromising stance on matters in defense of what he considered best for the Commission and the Court, even when he stood alone in opposition to his peers. This was the tenacity of the man we fondly called ‘Archie’.
Indeed, there are very few persons in the Caribbean legal fraternity whose professional acumen can rival Dr Archibald’s. Of his knowledge, experience and training, he dispensed freely and unstintingly to the RJLSC and the CCJ, always modestly and unassumingly.
Dr Archibald was a fearless and outstanding exemplar of the fortitude with which members on this and, indeed, all responsible institutions must serve.
His passing on 3rd April 2014 brought to an end a distinguished and illustrious career. The region is fortunate to have had the contribution of this brilliant mind. The RJLSC and the CCJ extend their most sincere condolences to his bereaved family.
