Media Advisory- CCJ hears “Lusignan Massacre” Appeal

7 Jul 2017

The Caribbean Court of Justice will hear the appeals GYCR2016/001 James Anthony Hyles v Director of Public Prosecutions and GYCR2016/002 Mark Williams v Director of Public Prosecutions.  (Consolidated by Order of Court dated 19/10/16)

Both Hyles & Williams previously went on trial for 11 counts of murder arising from the “Lusignan massacre” in Guyana in 2008. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty and the DPP appealed the verdict citing material irregularities during the trial. The Court of Appeal agreed and the case was remitted to the High Court for retrial. Mark Williams and James Hyles subsequently filed appeals to the Caribbean Court of Justice against the decision of the Court of Appeal
